On Splurging

As much as I love saving money – and it’s absolutely necessary if we want to make this Tiny House project a reality – I know that it’s also important to splurge a little sometimes.

Sometimes it’s important to treat yourself (in moderation) for different situations, to celebrate milestones, and sometimes just because. It doesn’t have to be something big, but it should definitely be something that makes you happy. And that is tip number one.

Let It Bring You Joy

This should be the first thing you think of when you are going to make a purchase for yourself. Will it make you happy? Is this something that will make your life better in some way? If so, it’s probably worth it.

Don’t Let It Bust Your Budget

Despite bringing you happiness, you should not be making any purchase that you can’t afford. Breaking the bank is not worth it, at least not right at that moment. Maybe it’s something you can save for later on, or ask as a group gift. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t or can’t have what you know will bring you joy or make your life better, but it’s important not to get caught up in the moment. Don’t let any transaction bust your budget.

Think It Through

Using your money towards a little some extra should not be a spontaneous action. It’s important to think through and figure out what is worth splurging for. Sometimes, when I give myself time to think things through, I realize that maybe it was just the idea of the object that I thought would make me happy, but in reality, it would not be making my life any easier and it wouldn’t in turn bring me joy to make the purchase. And other times, you don’t have to give it much thought – possibly because you’ve already been thinking about it since forever. Just make sure you know what you want before you buy it. It has to be worth it if you’re splurging.

My most recent splurges have been buying new couch pillows (I’ve never bought my own, it was finally time), buying a new toque for winter (my old one was quite worn out), and putting a 10% deposit down on our future new propane oven (necessity for the Tiny House that was on a sale we couldn’t pass up!). All these things have brought me joy in one way or another. The pillows always make me smile when I look at them, because it feels like an accomplishment that I finally put money towards something stylish for my own home. The toque makes me happy because my ears are not cold – and it’s stylish too. As for the oven, I think that one basically speaks for itself – it’s the first step towards building our very own Tiny House!

I’m sure I can’t be the only one who has been splurging lately, especially with the holidays fast approaching and everyone working extra shifts to get that time off during Christmas. What about you? What is something you recently purchased just for yourself? Let us know in the comments!
